Malang is a word with many, confusing, and even contradicting meanings, but to start with, you can say that a malang is mostly someone who does not know of his surroundings.
Malang is a word used for some Sufi saints, quite commonly, as well as a derogatory term sometimes, as a mad or a nomad, though in poetry it is mostly not seen as a derogatory term.
The word can be used in Urdu, Punjabi, and reportedly is also used in Afghani and even Persian, which probably is the root for the word. In Afghanistan, it is said, the word can be used for stage-magicians to sorcerers to beggars to sufi saints to holy men. J.L. Lee's Ancient Supremacy describes Malang as 'malang: a religious mystic, often with heterodox or extreme sufi tendencies; a shrine attendant.'
But then, I don't think we need to do a huge research for our meaning here, as you can see, it's more or less about someone who doesn't much care about his surroundings, someone who is not worldly while living in this world. I hope that's enough to get the meaning of things most of the times.

Malang in Malay means unfortunate
ReplyDeleteMalang Means Mad....... From Ahmad.
ReplyDeleteI guess Malang has Persian roots, since we use it a lot in our daily conversations. it has two meanings. one means that someone is dopey, and it's used when someone doesn't listen to you properly or when you have to explain something for someone several times. Although it can be offensive and should not be used with elders of whom U r not close to. The other one accompany with word Mast (Mast o Malang) which means someone is so happy and tipsy coz he drank too much alchohol and doesn't know what is going on around him.
ReplyDeleteThanks a lot. Getting from some one who knows it first hand!!!!
DeleteI don't think malang is Urdu. I think it is Sanskrit.
ReplyDeleteMalang is made up of two words Mal (dirty)and ang( body). Mal is another word for feces. Mael is another word that associated with it that we use daily which means the dirt on your body Mixed with body oils.
In yoga there is a posture called Malasan which is a squatting position and you can take a guess at why it's called that.
The general connotation of malang is carefree, not bothered by things however literal meaning is likely from the malang sect not bathing and cleaning themselves.
Dear all
ReplyDeleteMast Malang is the complete word which is most often used, and it mean
A Happy and tension free personality...A saint like person.
For ur kind information its is not like (mal)+(ang)...Rofl
If we dont know the meaning we should not tell anything like mal..lol
LOL on the sanskrit word. Malang is NOT a derivative of mael. And whatever it means, it definitely does NOT mean (mal) + (ang).
ReplyDeleteMalang is often used for sufi saints or someone who is either not so worldly or doesn't give a damn about what's going on around them. For example, young malang (punjabi movie), dum malang malang (hit number from Dhoom 3). I doubt any of these would have existed if it meant maela ang or dirty body.
I'm a cat. Meow meow.
ReplyDeletelolxyy meaow meaooww
ReplyDeleteThe way my granddad used "Malang" on its own was for someone who is devoid of materialistic comforts/currency/game points either by their own choice (saints/devotees etc.) or by misfortune (i.e. bankrupt).
ReplyDeleteNote: If someone lost a lot of points in a card game, they could be called to have become "Malang".
I think Malang is a kind of crazy person who become crazy because of other person's love. The difference between Malang and crazy is: Malang never hurts somebody but crazy may. From Hamid.
