Mujhe Kya Bechega Rupaiya (Satyamev Jayate): Lyrics, Translation

Show: Satyamev Jayate
Episode: #3, Against Dowry Practice
Composer: Ram Sampath
Lyricist: Swanand Kirkire
Singer: Sona Mahapatra

Babul pyare sajna sakha re
Suno o meri maiyya
Bojh nahi main kisi ke sar ka
Naa majhdhar mein naiyya
Patwar banoongi, leharon se ladungi
Arey mujhe kya bechega rupaiya
Ho arey mujhe kya bechega rupaiya

O dear father, o beloved, friend,
Listen o my mother,
I am not a burden on anyone's head,
Nor is my boat in the midstream..
I'll be the oar, I'll fight the waves (against us),
How can money sell me,
O, how could money ever sell me..

Kal baba ki ungli thaame chali thi
Kal baba ki lathi bhi bann jaaungi
Amma tere gharonde ki chidiya hoon main
Daana lekar hi wapas ghar aaungi

Yesterday I was walking holding the father's finger,
Tomorrow I'll become his walking stick too..
O mother I am the bird of your nest,
I'll come back home with grain only..

Jiski fitrat mein hairat samaayi nahi
Jisko daulat se zyada main bhaayi nahi
Aise saajan ki mujhko zaroorat nahi
Naa kehne ka sun lo muhurat yahi
Akeli chalungi, Kismat se milungi
Arey mujhe kya bechega rupaiya
Ho arey mujhe kya bechega rupaiya
Ho ho ho..

In whose nature there is no curiosity*
who didn't like me more than he liked money,
I don't need such a partner..
Listen, this is the time to say no..
I'll walk alone, I'll meet the fate,
How can money sell me!

Dil se dil ke taar toh jude nahi
Do rasmon pe daulat ye kaahe bahe
Hum toh pyaar ki khwahish mein rishte bunein
Do rishton mein lalach hum kaahe sahein
Kya shaadi ke aage zindagi hi nahi
Jo shaadi hisaabo ki keval hai bahi
Aise saajan ki mujhko zaroorat nahi
Naa kehne ka sun lo muhurat yahi

The wires of hearts weren't attached,
then why waste money on a couple of customs?
We weave relations, willing for love..
Why should we bear greed for a couple of such relations..
Is there no life at all ahead of marriage-
that marriage alone is the book of all records?
I don't need such a partner..
Listen, this only is the time to say no..

Subaha si khilungi, Ratiya si bharungi
Arey mujhe kya bechega rupaiya
Ho arey mujhe kya bechega rupayya

I'll blossom like a morning, I'll be filled like a night,
How can money sell me..
How can money ever sell me!

  2. Firstly I want to thank and congratulate you for the efforts you are putting in explaining the meaning of the songs!

Secondly, I want to point out some small mistakes in the lyrics.

In the 4th para as mentioned in here, I don't think it is "do rasmon" and "Do rishton". Though it's a bit unclear, it seems to be "To rasmon" and "Wo rishton".

In the first para it's "Sun O Meri" and in second para it's "ungli ko thaame"! Silly to point out, I know! :)

Also, in the second last line of the same para, it's "Aisi Shaadi". I think you forgot to change! :)
I also have doubt in "Ratiya si bharungi" in the last para!

    Rest all is great! Kudos!

  4. a coutry's beauty lies in d way d women's lf d country r treated. Respect ur daughter's pride, dare to say 'no' to dowry. Ur girl deserves a better family, n a better guy who vil respect her, n marry her bcoz he loves her... :)

  11. Thank you very much!!

People who write meaning normally go word-by word and sometimes lose the beauty of the narration.

Yours was perfect. Just what it should be. Good job.

  16. It was a high counsel that I once heard given to a young person, "Always do what you are afraid to do."
    and
    If you would create something,
    you must be something.

O dear father, o beloved, friend,

    Listen o my mother,

I am not a burden for anyone,

Nor am I a boat in midstream..

I'll be the oar, I'll fight the waves (against us),

    How can money sell me,

O, how could money ever sell me..

Yesterday I was walking holding father's finger,

Tomorrow I'll be his walking cane too..

O mother I am a bird in your nest,

I'll surely come back home with grain ..

A person who refuses to learn and grow

and values money more than me,

Is the kind of partner I can do without..

Listen this is the right time to say no.

I'll walk alone, I'll keep my tryst with fate,

    How can money sell me!

When there is no real meeting of hearts,

why waste money on meaningless rituals?

I desire love to be the bond between hearts..

Material greed has no place in such a relationship

Isn't there anything else other than marriage in life?-

    A marriage that's a mere formality

Is something that I don't want..

Listen, this is the right time to say no..

I'll blossom like a morning, I'll be filled like a night,

    How can money sell me..

How can money ever sell me!

  23. I would first thank you for posting the meaning of these lyrics for those who do not understand Hindi.
Secondly, I would like to mention that in the second last paragraph the line is 'Aise Shaadi ki Mujko Zaroorath Nahi'
Instead of 'Aise Saajan ki Mujko Zaroorath Nahi'.
Thank you and please make the corrections all the same.
