Movie: Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani
Music: Pritam
Lyrics: Amitabh Bhattacharya
Singers: Rekha Bharadwaj, Tochi Raina
Kabeera is one of the best songs of YJHD. The song is not just good with music, but the lyrics of the song are superb as well. Amitabh Bhattacharya has tried to do away with cliches like 'mitti ki sondhi khushboo' for a village and talks about the broken cot and milk cream, which are even more down to earth and true to village culture. He uses 'Nirmohee' [meaning given below] once again, after Coke Studio's Nirmohiya. So overall, a beautiful number to listen to.
Kaisee teri khudgarzee
Na dhoop chune na chhaanv
Kaisee teri khudgarzee
Kisi thaur tike na paanv
How's this selfishness of yours,
that you don't take the sun, nor take the shade..
How's this selfishness of yours,
that your feet don't stay anywhere..
Ban liyaa apnaa paighambar
Tar liyaa tu saat samandar
Phir bhee sookhaa mann ke andar
Kyoon reh gaya
You've tried being your own god,
and crossed all seven seas,
Still, there is a draught within your heart,
Why is it so..
Re Kabeera maan jaa
Re Fakeera maan jaa
Aa jaa tujh ko pukaaray teri parchhaaiyaan
Re Kabira maan jaa
Re Fakeera maan jaa
Kaisa tu hai nirmohee kaisaa harjaaiyaa
O Kabira, listen to me..
O saint, believe me..
Come, your shadows call you [back]..
O Kabira, listen to me..
O saintly one, believe me..
What a loveless and ruthless person you are..
[Nirmohee is someone who doesn't have any love nor hatred, for anyone or anything. Someone who is neutral to the world and its happenings.]
Tooti chaarpaai wo hi
Thandi purvaai rastaa dekhe
Doodhon ki malaayi wohi
Mitti ki suraahee rastaa dekhe..
That broken cot,
that cool breeze from the east, awaits you..
That milk cream
and the earthen pot of cold water await you..
[Suraahee is an earthen pot with a long neck and keeps water cool.]
Kaisi teri khudgarzi
Lab namak rame naa misree
Kaisi teri khudgarzi
Tujhe preet purani bisri..
Mast Maula, mast Kalandar
Tu hawa kaa ek bavandar
Bujh ke yoon andar hi andar
Kyun reh gaya..
How's this selfishness of yours,
Neither salt nor sugar fit on your tongue..
How's this selfishness of yours,
that you have forgot old love..
O free man, free spirit,
you're a storm of wind..
then why have you ended
within yourself only..
Re Kabira maan jaa
Re Faqeera maan jaa
Aa jaa tujh ko pukaaray teri parchhaaiyaan
Re Kabeera maan jaa
Re Fakeera maan jaa
Kaisa tu hai nirmohi kaisa harjaiyaa...

ReplyDeleteThanks a lot for the translation & beautiful explanation...
ReplyDeletewhat is the meaning of kabira?
ReplyDeleteKabira is a Saint who has a very big name in indian poetic literature! From the early 17th or 18th century!Mainly known for his 'DOHA'! Doha is a type of poem who has two lines only... but it says 2000 words when u learnd the deep meaning of it! Kabira wrote many poems (Doha) showing his love to God but when u read them it sounds like a beautiful love lines to a lover n not God! In this song has one paragraph where the poet shows his anger n ruthlessness of his/lover n in other paragraph (the one which starts with d word re kabira) yhe poet calls back his lover! Maan ja means plz believe me.... ! So all in all.... the moral of the song is 'choose me love me come back to me oh.my dear!'
DeleteFirstly I want to say that I'm not a robot !!!
ReplyDeleteAnd...
As far as I know In Persian/Dari/Farsi Languages Kabir/Kabeer means Great and important.
Kabira refers to Saint Kabir , a great Indian poet famous for his Dohas(Couplets) - which in turn were characterised by raw wisdom and promotion of pragmatism (apart from the regular love of God, -of course). ;)
ReplyDeleteGreat song love it
ReplyDeleteAwesome
ReplyDeleteVery apt translation... But i think Lab will be lips.

ReplyDeleteKabira,, can simply refer to the name of the character in the file, His name is Kabir..
ReplyDeleteSuperb song..really loved this one..thanks to the writer of this song.for using good words and to Arijit also for his voice!
ReplyDeleteYea right.. Kabir was ancient poet but here it simply refers to kabir-ranbir kapoor..anyways very nice translation
ReplyDeleteYes agreed it refers to ranbir kapoor whose name in movie is kabir.where kabir has dreams to travel whole world and live life to fullest.he gets chance to live his dream he chooses his dream over love.and during this journey his dad dies and he will b unable to attend even his funeral .in this craze of travelling world he keeps loosing his friends and family .this song is to that kabir to come back to his love (naina)
ReplyDeleteThis translation makes me fall in love wid this song even more!...........:) :')
ReplyDeleteThanks SO much for the translation! It's excellent :) Love this song <3
ReplyDeleteKabir means(All-Aware) one name in 99 Names of Allah
ReplyDeleteBrilliant translation. Kudos!
ReplyDeleteI think depika making fun of ranbir by telling him kabira. That look you (ranbir) knows everything like famous saint kabira. You indifferent about love, woman but at the end you are alone. You(ranbir) feel it but don't admit because you are kabira
ReplyDeleteBrilliant!!
ReplyDeleteHeart touching song. Perfect translation
ReplyDeletethank u very much
ReplyDeleteThanks for the translation . Is this hindi or someother language .. ??
ReplyDeleteIt's Hindi only. :)
ReplyDeleteThank you , what a lovely translation , made my day :)
ReplyDeletehey! fakeera means a fakir. in simple words ither a beggar or 1 who lives on what others give (bhikshu living on bhiksha)
ReplyDeleteIs this a patriotic song ? Ir can one dedicate this to their lover?
ReplyDeleteCertainly not a patriotic song. One can dedicate it to a lover, but it's more of a situational track, fits relatively lesser situations.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful translation. Increases the appreciation for this beautiful sing even more. Thank you and have a lovely new year :)
ReplyDeleteThis is a Sufi song. In fact, all songs nowadays are Sufi songs. There is a story in the song. The story goes like this:
ReplyDeleteO my lover, you are so selfish, you don't choose anything, either heat or cold, you don't stay anywhere...
Means the lover does not interfere with his love's matters.Neither does he ever meet his love.Neither is he ever sad nor happy.
Then, a description of the hero.
He became his own prophet.Means a prophet tells what the Lord wishes him to say but here she says that you are saying what you yourself want to say or indirectly she is saying that you are just like God.
Then she says you have crossed(swam across) the seven seas.Means he has gone to many places. Then she says still their is dryness in his heart(His heart is barren). Means he could not enjoy anything.Neither the happiness or the sorrow.
Then she sadly remarks why like this my lover?
Then, starts the main song.
Kabira actually here refers refers not to the hero of the film Kabir but the hero of the song.
He is also refered to s "fakir" meaning saint.
Here shadows calling you refers to the lovers.Well, lovers because he is compared to God in the starting of the song,so the shadows are us ,the souls lovers of God.
Then, she says you are simply uninterested in everything(Nir mohi) and are ready to choose any path(Har Jai).
Means the hero is busy with himself only.He prefers to be alone.
Very nice
DeleteBeautiful
Delete@aayush. Very deep translation of the song. Seems like you know the true meaning of Love.
ReplyDeleteThe lyrics are just too beautiful. I saw the movie with spanish subtitles so it was a bit difficult but now I know the real meaning. Thanks for the translation!
ReplyDeleteNothing much to say bt this song means my life....My best pal ChamCham
ReplyDeleteThank u boss..
ReplyDeleteNice Translation. Now came to knew song with menaing.... and Meaning of song is excellent. also music, video is great.
ReplyDeletekabira was just the name of a person who played the lead role in the movie, where from this song is taken. no saint n all.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the translation. I hope they make more songs like this which touches our ears and tickle our souls. Most songs now a days lacks beautiful meanings and soulful music...
ReplyDeletewhy cant kabira mean grave.. as in lonely like..
ReplyDeleteand fakira mean poor and lonely
Beautifully Written and even more eloquently translated and explained.
ReplyDeleteThank you
such a great translation to a beautiful song. In this day and age - such a song, its words, really hits home.
ReplyDeleteKaise yeh zamane ki khudgarzi.
Agar Zindagi me ( Pyar, Geet aur Sangeet) na hota..... to bhagwan kasam me to kab ki khud khushi ker leta.... kasam se~
ReplyDeletewow
ReplyDeleteKabira is in reference to the Lead character Kabir in the movie
ReplyDeleteLovely song :-)
ReplyDeleteA thank you cannot express my gratitude for the great service youre doing by explaining us the meaning of these beautiful lyrics.
ReplyDeleteA suggestion. Pls try to include word to word meanings also. Will b very helpful for nonhindi speakers and nri kids to understand the words. And once they do, theyl never forget.
Thank uu
Kabira could refer to Saint Kabir. Also, Bunny's real name is Kabir Thapar :), so it could be a reference to that.
ReplyDeletepaighambar- is Prophet, not God!
ReplyDeleteAnyway, brilliant!
And I'm using translations to post on youtube videos- with due credit and link to your site.
Aayush nailed it on the translation. Kabira is the hero of the song. Neither quite the poet nor the hero of the film. What a beautiful explanation, Aayush.
ReplyDeleteCheck out Aayush's explanation if you want to understand the song.
thank you..excellent work of translation retaining the spirit of the song
ReplyDeleteSuch a beautiful sensational and touching song I heard after a long time. Love the translation. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful song.....love it....bringing back a lot of sweet memories...~sandy
ReplyDeleteamazing translation.....touched..!!!!
ReplyDeleteOnly one correction...paighambar means "Prophet", meaning you became your own prophet- not your own God. Paighambar is a Farsi word to mean "one who brings a paighaam (message).
ReplyDeleteThis whole song is better than the movie!
ReplyDeleteYou can just write a plot of a totally different movie by just reading the translation.
there are no words to say that this is the bestest ever song i heard it just amazing i love this song so so so much.
ReplyDeleteepic translation !
ReplyDeleteGood translation but at one place it seems inappropriate. Nirmohee and harjaiyan is not loveless and ruthless.it shoud be like 'how selfish you are that neither have attachment nor problem with anyone'.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful translation......
ReplyDeleteAwesome
