Movie: Dedh Ishqiya

Dil ka diya, shab bhar jalaa..
Tere liye o piyaa..
Jaate hue keh ke gaya
Yaar alvida alvidaa..
The lamp of my heart, burned all night,
for you, O beloved..
When it died, it went, saying goodbye, forever..
Dil to diya hai, jaan bhi de de
Aur nazraana kya hoga..
Lau ko chhoo ke laut aaya jo..
Wo parvaana kya hoga..
You have given your heart (for the beloved), give your life too,
what greater gift can you give..
What's there in a moth that touched the flame,
and came back
[The implication is that moths are to die in the flame, and that is what you should do. For more, see Shama/Parvana Meaning.
Also, look at the 'Yamak' in diyaa. Dil ka diya has diya meaning lamp, and dil to diya hai means, you have given the heart, and dil to diya hai could still mean the heart is a lamp. Word play!]
Kya hoga, kya hoga, kya hoga..
Kya kya ji, kya kya ji, kya hoga..
What'll it be, what'll it be..
Sar pe falak hai, falak pe sitare
Aji humne to dekhe hain aankhon mein saare
O palkein jhukaane se kya hoga..
There is sky above us, and stars on that sky,
I have seen them all in your eyes,
now how does it matter if you lower your eyes..
Kya hoga, kya hoga, kya hoga..
Kya kya ji, kya kya ji, kya hoga..
Kya kya bataayein ke kin kin zamaanon mein
Dekhna hai hum ne tumhe
O piya, ji piya..
Rumani mausam ki sab daastaanon mein
Dekha hai hum ne tumhe
O piya, ji piya..
How can I tell you in which all ages
I have seen you,
O beloved, very beloved..
In all the stories of romantic weathers,
I have seen you,
O beloved, very beloved..
O piya, ji piya..
More piya ji, more piya ji..
O beloved, very beloved..
My beloved, very beloved..
[Ji actually is a sign of respect, and here, in a little uncommon way, ji is used with a beloved, to show love and respect at the same time.]
Jaana tu baarish ki aawaaz mein..
Kabhi chhaaon ke andaaz mein..
Kabhi udti hui dhoop mein..
Kabhi khushboo ki parvaaz mein..
O beloved, you're there in the sound of rains,
and sometimes in the styles of shades (or shadows)
Sometimes in flying sunshine,
and sometimes in the flights of fragrances..
Udte guzarte jo dariya ne dekha..
Paani pe parchhayi sehla ke dekha..
katra ke ab hum se kya hoga..
As if flying, when passing, the river saw,
stroked the shadow on water and felt..
Now what's the point of avoiding me..
Zindagi us pe vaar ke aaye..
Saare ehsaan utaar ke aaye..
Humne taare utaare the lekin
Us ne to aasmaan loot liya..
I have sacrificed my life over her,
I have come, having returned all the favours,
I had picked the stars,
but she robbed the entire sky..
[1. The gender of the person in question is not mentioned, we can do that in Hindi/Urdu, however one can safely assume/guess it's a girl being talked about.
2. the implication of stars and sky is probably something like I had seen and loved her eyes (refer earlier mention to stars) while she took his heart and hence everything.]
Loot liya bhai, loot liya bhai
Loot liya bhai, loot liya bhai, loot liya..
Robbed me, ah, robbed me, ah, robbed me..
Parda uthai ke, ghoongat girai ke
Chain hamara loot liya..
lifting the veil up, and falling the veil down,
she robbed me of my peace..
Loot liya bhai, loot liya bhai, loot liya..
Nazar uthayi aur..
Nazar uthayi aur, palkein gira ke loot liya..
Salaam-e-shauk ne kuchh is tarah se loot liya..
Robbed me, ah, robbed me,
She lifted her eyes..
She lifted her eyes, and then closed her eyelids (as feeling shy), and robbed me.
The salute of love robbed me in such a way...
Loot liya bhai, loot liya bhai, loot liya..
Na jaane khoon hua..
Na jaane khoon hua, kitni aarzuon ka..
Labon mein paan ki surkhi laga ke loot liya..
Robbed me, ah, robbed me,
I don't know how many desires were killed,
she looted me, marking the redness of betel-leaf in my lips..
[Now that could be her simply feeding him a betel-leaf-preparation, or, well, passing it through the lips.]
Wafa se loota kabhi kabhi aur kabhi jafaa se loot liya
Sitam sitam hai, sitam sitam hai..
Sitam sitam, har ada pe loot liya..
She robbed me sometimes by her love, and sometimes with her torment,
this is cruelty, complete cruelty,
it's a cruelty, she robbed me with her styles..
Loot liya bhai, loot liya bhai, loot liya..
Loot liya bhai, loot liya bhai, loot liya..
Udte guzarte jo dariya ne dekha..
ReplyDeletePaani pe parchhayi sehla ke dekha..
I think this is "when the river saw something fly by, the river stroked its shadow and wondered"
just a minor thing of adding a "something fly by" which is what I think Gulzaarsaab meant when he said"udte guzarte jo"
loot liya isn't exactly robbed me...it's more like ruined me. The poet is saying that her love was so powerful it ruined him completely.
