Patakha Guddi Lyrics Translation [Highway]

Once again, Dunkdaft did it with the speed of light. Another Rahman song, after all. But then, that helps me, because a Rahman song keeps getting better and more refined. So I read his translation and checked a few more versions of lyrics and of course listened to the song and in that the confusing words numerous times and corrected a few things here and there and refined all that I could, to get what is here for you. I still have doubt with two lines, one of which I am not able to hear clearly still. Hope the rest is correct. Please send your comments and we'll correct anything that's wrong.

Music: A R Rahman
Lyrics: Irshad Kamil
Singers: Nooran Sisters

Mitthe paan di gilauri,
Lathha suit da Lahori,
Fatte maardi billori,
Jugni mel mel ke, kood faand ke,
Chakk chakaute jaave..

A sweet preparation of betel leaf,
A length of Lahori (ladies') suits' cloth
The kitten having fun
[This is the description of the girl here, she is having a sweet paan and wearing a Lahori suit, hvaing fun]
The firefly, jumping and meeting all,
goes here and there in a moment..

Maula tera maali,
O hariyaali jungle waali,
Tu de har gaali pe taali,
Uski kadam kadam rakhwaali,
Ainweyi lok-laaj ki soojh soch ki
kyun hai aafat daali
Tu le naam rab da, naam saai ka
Ali Ali Ali Ali

God is your gardener, [or caretaker, the meaning here]
O greenery of forests,
You clap on every swearing [as in, you just have fun]
and He (God) protects you at every step.
Why is the tension of all the regard of world and thoughts
there with you..
Just remember the maker, God,
Ali ali ali..

Sharf khuda ka, zarf khuda ka,
Ali Ali Ali Ali
Ali ho, Ali ho, Chali o re chali, chali, chali
Ali Ali, teri gali, wo to chali,
Ali Ali, teri gali, chali o..

[Sharf = Honour, Greatness]

Honour of God, Wisdom of God,
O Lord,
She comes, comes to your lane, O Lord..

O Jugni O, patakha guddi O,
Nashe mein ud jaaye re haaye re
Sajje khabbe dhabbe killi ho,

O firefly, O fiery kite,
Intoxicated she flies,
All over the places around.

Maine to tere tere utte chhaddiyaan doreyaan,

Tu to paak rab da baanka bachha
Raj dulara tu hi,
paak rab da baanka bachha
Uska pyaara tu hi
Maalik ne jo chinta di to, door karega wo hi

I have left the strings to You [So You will take care, O Lord]

You are a fearless kid of holy God,
His very dear kid..
Fearless kid of holy God,
You are his beloved kid,..
The tension God has given, He only will end it..

Naam Ali ka le ke tu to, naach le gali gali
Le naam Ali Ali, Ali ho, Ali ho,
Tu le naam rab da, naam saai ka,
Ali Ali Ali Ali

Chanting name of Lord, dance in streets,
chant Ali Ali,
Just say name of your God, your Lord,
Ali Ali Ali Ali..

Jugni rukh pippal da hoi,
Jis nu pooje ta har koi, *
Jisdi fasal kisi na boyi
Ghar bhi rakh sake na koi..

The Jugni has become a face of the Peepal (tree),
that is worshiped by everyone,
Yet no one has seeded this plant,
and no one can keep her at home. [as in, in their control.]

Rasta naap rahi marjaani,
Patthi baarish da hai paani,
Jab nazdeek jahaan de aani,
Jugni maili si ho jaani..

The darned girl is roaming a lot,
The kid's like rainwater,
When she comes near the real world,
She will be a little dirty..

[as in, she looks all pure, charismatic now, but in the real world, she'd lose her pureness, her charm.]

Tu le naam rab da Ali Ali,
jhall khaleran chali,
Naam rab da Ali Ali,
Har darwaaja Ali,

Just chant the name of Lord, Ali Ali,
she goes doing madness
name of Lord, Ali Ali,
At each doorstep, Ali.

Saayin re... Sai Re..
Maine to tere tere, utte chhaddiyan doriyaan..

  1. Very helpful....just one thing to suggest..i think the line 'Jugni rukh pittal da hoye' is actually 'Jugni rukh peepal da hoye' where 'rukh' means tree and peepal is the name of tree...thus it goes along the following lines which state that the Peepal tree is worshipped by all...

    ReplyDelete
  2. i guess its peepal. not peetal, even in dunkdraft it is wrong.. since peepal is worshipped.
i guess by zarf means like they mean food is by god...

  6. * zarf is an urdu word. It means rank, calibre or wisdom.According to these lyrics it means God has given Ali great honour and rank.
*rukh is again an urdu word which means towards something or another side of something. And it's not peetal it's peepal which is a tree worshipped in many areas of India.

  7. Very nice and useful
I think Zarf here means Generosity ..eg. Kam-zarf (ungenerous)

  10. @Anonymous:

Will check that. Hope this time they're correct though. In Chennai Express they wrote words that don't exist. So not much hopes from T-Series. Though I'd love if they give right lyrics. You never know if you've got all words correct in a Rahman song.

  11. Why can't it be: " Jugni ruk bepardaa hoee", when jugni stopped (unlike her very nature), she lost her grace?

  12. Thanks. Pl. translate the Rahman version of this song. Hope you know, there are few extra lines in that version.

  13. It could be anything. But it's jugni rukh peepal da hoi. Pretty clear in Rahman's version. Will try and write that soon.

  14. Thanks. I guess there are only two extra lines, not much, in Rahman's Version.

  20. In addition to cup, "Zarf" also means wisdom or rank.

    Mufasir

  21. Guys "pak rab da banka baccha " ali was ranked as sher e khuda because of his troumendos truthfulness towards Allah almighty which made him a true person with musallam imaan, he was real brave thus considered as banka baccha whose doesn't fear any wrongfulness

  22. My friend from Afghanistan says zarf means 'haisiyat', power, ability

  23. Ali is the cousin of Prophet Mohammad. A lot of Sufi songs draw spirituality towards God through him.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Hi..don't you think the meaning of "Guddi" here should be kite and not a doll. The song has the lines "hawa mein udti jaye" which is more meaningful for a kite and not a doll. Also later the lyrics has "Maine to tere chhaddeyan doriyaan" which makes sense for a kite.

  25. The translation is wrong. Maula can mean many things other than God. In case of Maula Ali R.A it means guide, protecting friend, intercessor between god and a person. and so on.

When they Sharf khuda ka, zarf khuda ka it meand Honour of god is Ali R.A and Wisdom of God is Ali R.A .

Nowhere in the lyrics they say Ali R.A is god.

Allah is one and all are his creations including the Holy Prophet muhammed S.A.S and Hazrat Maula Ali R.A.

No one is worthy of Worship except him. No one is equal to him and he is alone.

  26. I think "rukh peepal da hui" means, she has become like a peepal tree, which in subsequent lines is explained as...

Someone everyone revers/worships, none has ever sown/planted (meaning the origins are not known to the man, divine in other words), nor anyone ever dares to grow in his home (cannot be domesticated/tamed, is wild)...

    ReplyDelete
  27. which language it is?

    ReplyDelete
  28. may be "ghar bhi rakh sake na koi" refers to the HINDU custom according to which it is inauspicious to plant a peepal tree inside house and can be planted only inside temple premises. But does not match with the sense of the song so any guesses any1

  29. Its 'jhall khaleran challi ' not chall khale rann challi! Jhall means silliness, khaleran means to spread! Line means jugni going to spread her own silliness n innocence!!

    ReplyDelete
  30. All the references to Ali R.A. here are wrong.

He was not cousin of the prophet Muhammed PBUH but his son in law.

  31. A very beautiful poem drawing spiritual inspirations from Maula e Kainat Ali alihum as salam. Many of it verses allude to a Sufi's care free behavior and accountability to Allah alone and no materialistic bonds whatsoever.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Its jhall Khaleran challi which means pagalpanti karne chali.... not chall kale rann challi

  33. Excellent attempt on translation. One correction i would want to suggest in "Patthi baarish da hai paani" The "patthi" word in this is not a swear word but it means kid or daughter , here it refers to the girl. so it means 'the girl is like the rain water'

    ReplyDelete
  34. @Anubha yeah you're right. Thanks for that. Actually we use Pattha and Patthi more like soft swear word rather than for their meaning so didn't think of it. Though you probably understand that there is a tone of 'see how she dares do this' in that word here.

    Thanks again. :)

  43. you should have add description of "Ali a.s" as well... He was a cousin brother of Prophet Mohammad p.b.u.h and his name is used in sufi (spiritual) songs usually. This is also a sufi song.

  44. I know Ali is Mohammad's cousin. But it is also one of the 99 names of Allah. Therefore it is more likely they are just speaking about God in general and not Mohammad's cousin.

  46. Prosperous translation will be a sign associated with the way tightly this lives as much as the particular expectations since: recreating exactly as for as you possibly can the meaning on the supply word, applying normal kinds of the particular receptor/target terminology in a way since is appropriate to the kind of word becoming converted and providing most issues with the meaning tightly and quickly comprehensible for the meant audience/reader. From a technical perspective, Human Translation online is often a procedure to abstract the meaning of an word coming from the current sorts and replicate that which means in a variety of kinds of another terminology.
