Aaj ke Naam Lyrics Translation | Haider

Movie: Haider
Music: Vishal Bhardwaj
Poetry: Faiz Ahmad 'Faiz'
Singer: Rekha Bharadwaj
Label: Junglee Music

The song Aaj ke naam is actually taken from a poem of 'Faiz' called 'intisaab', meaning 'dedication', and is simply one. The songs of the album can be bought HERE.

[Translation note: 'ke naam' might literally sound like meaning 'the name of', but it would actually mean 'dedicated to', and hence, is translated as '(a dedication) to...']

Aaj ke naam aur
Aaj ke gham ke naam
Aaj ka gham ke hai zindagi ke bhare gulistaan se khafa
Zard patton ka ban
Zard patton ka ban jo mera des hai
Dard ki anjuman jo mera des hai

(a dedication) to this day
And to this day’s sorrow..
Today's sorrow that disdains the blossoming garden of life,
To the forest of yellow leaves-
the forest of yellow (dying) leaves that my country is,
to the assembly of pain that my country is..

Un dukhi maaon ke naam
Raat mein jin ke bachche bilakhte hain aur
Neend ki maar khaaye hue baazuon se sambhalte nahi
Dukh bataate nahi
Minnaton zaariyon se behelte nahi

To those sad mothers
Whose children cry in the night
And are not silenced by the arms fatigued by lack of sleep,
Who don't say what troubles them
nor are consoled by entreaties or tears..

Un haseenaaon ke naam
Jinki aankhon ke gul
Chilmanon aur dareechon ki belon pe bekaar khil khil ke
Murjha gaye hain

To those beauties
The flowers of whose eyes
Blossoming from curtains and windows
And withered away in waiting.

Un byaahataon ke naam
Jinke badan
Be-muhabbat riyaakaar sejon pe saj-saj ke ukta gaye hain

To those brides,
Whose bodies
Unloved, have grown tired of being adorned on the beds..

Bewaaon ke naam
Katariyon aur galiyon, mohallon ke naam
Jinki napaak khashaak se chaand raaton
Ko aa-aa ke karta hai aksar vazoo
Jin ke saayon mein karti hai aah-o-bukaa
Aanchalon ki hinaa
Choodiyon ki khanak
Kaakulon ki mahak
Aarzoomand seenon ki apne paseene mein jalne ki boo.

To widows
To streets and neighbourhoods
With whose unholy garbage does the moon
clean itself up on nights..
And under whose shadows cries out
The fragrance of veils
The jingle of bangles
The scent of loosened hair
The smell of wishing bodies burning in their own sweat.

Padhne waalon ke naam
Aaj ke naam aur aaj ke gham ke naam,
un dukhi maaon ke, un haseenaaon ke, un biyaahataaon ke naam

To students
To today, and today's sorrow,
To those sad mothers, those beauties, those brides..

Wonderful song... and my heartiest thanks to the translator for beautifully expressing the feeling, the beauty and the pathos of the song in words...

A very powerful and emotional poetry and an excellent translation.. Although to me, "Padhne waalon ke naam" seems more like "To readers" rather than "To students"..
