Music: Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy
Lyrics: Gulzar
Singer: Mohan, Nooran Sisters, Shankar Mahadevan
This one is a beautiful song where Gulzar Saab talks about a river that used to flow holding both the shores, and by the medium of the river, trying to tell the situation of Sahibaan, who was torn between her family and her love.
The lyrics here have been written more as poetry, and a lot of repetition has been trimmed away. Also, 'it' and 'she' both are used for the river, as seemed to go well with the line.
ek nadi thi
dono kinaare thaam ke behti thi
ek nadi thi...
there was a river,
it used to flow, holding both the shores.
there was a river.
ek nadi thi
koi kinara chhoR na sakti thi
ek nadi thi...
there was a river,
it could leave neither shore,
there was a river..
toDti to sailaab aa jata
karvaT le to saari zameen beh jaati
ek nadi thi..
had she broken away, there would have been a flood,
and had she taken a turn, the whole earth would have flown.
there was a river.
ek nadi thi
dono kinaare thaam ke behti thi
aazaad thi jab jharne ki tarah
chaTTaano pe behti thi
ek nadi thi..
when she was free like a fall,
she used to flow on rocks.
there was a river.
ek nadi thi
dono kinaare thaam ke behti thi
ek nadi thi…
dil ek zaalim haakim tha
wo uski zanjeeron mein rehti thi
ek nadi thi..
the heart was a cruel ruler,
and she lived in its chains,
there was a river.
ek nadi thi...
