raat kitni daastanein keh rahi hai
ik nadi yaadon ki hai jo beh rahi hai
how many stories is the night telling us.
there is a river of memories, that is flowing.
milne aaye hain hum se
beete huye lamhe kal ke
kitne pehchaane chehre
tanhaai mein hain jhalke
yoon to koi hai kahaan koi kahaan,
yaadein leke aayi hain sabko yahaan
the moments from yesterday,
have come to meet me.
so many known faces
are visible in loneliness.
as such someone is here and someone there.
memories have brought everyone here.
raat kitni daastanein keh rahi hai
ik nadi yaadon ki hai jo beh rahi hai
ek maathe par damakti ek bindi
ek aanchal jaane kyun lehra raha hai
ghar ke darwaaze pe sundar si rangoli
phir koi tyohaar milne aa raha hai
a bindi shining on one forehead,
some scarf waving, for an unknown reason.
a beautiful art on the door of the house,
some festival is coming to meet us again.
[Bindi is a red dot Indian women wear on their foreheads. Rangoli is a traditional colorful art made on the entrance to a home, mostly on festivals.]
nanhe paaon se chalta hai koi
ungliyon se jap raha hai koi maala
ek thaali ik kalaai ek raakhi
ek mandir ek deepak ik ujaala
someone walks with small feet,
someone is chanting a prayer with fingers on beads.
(I see) a tray, a wrist, and a raakhi,
a temple, a lamp, and a light.
[a raakhi is a thread a sister traditionally ties on a brother's wrist on the festival of rakshabandhan.]
raat kitni daastanein keh rahi hai
ik nadi yaadon ki hai jo beh rahi hai
dosti ka haath hai kandhe pe rakkha
pyaar se do aankhein chhalki ja rahi hain
dhoop ki hai dhajjiyaan baaGon mein bikhri
peRon mein chhupke hawaayein gaa rahi hain
a hand of friendship is on my shoulder,
and with love, two eyes are brimming.
there are shreds of sunshine scattered in the garden,
hidden in the trees, the winds are singing.
lambi saansein lete hain saawan ke jhoole
ghaaT par paayi pyaasi gagariyaan hain
nadiyaa kinaare hai bansi ka lehra
ek pagDanDi pe khanki chooRiyaan hain
the swings of the rainy season take long breaths,
and there are thirsty vessels on the river bank
(where women go to bring water for the day.)
on the river bank, there is a wave of the sound of a flute,
there are bangles jingling on a pedestrian's path.
raat kitni daastanein keh rahi hai
ik nadi yaadon ki hai jo beh rahi hai
milne aaye hain hum se
beete hue lamhe kal ke
kitne pehchaane chehre
tanhaai mein hain chhalke
yun toh koi hai kahaan koi kahaan…
yaadein leke aayi hai sabko yahaan
raat kitni daastanein keh rahi hai
ik nadi yaadon ki hai jo beh rahi hai
