Movie: Chhapaak [Meaning]
Music: Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy
Lyrics: Gulzar
Singer: Arijit Singh
Label: Zee Music Company
This song is about an acid attack victim whose face is singed because of the acid thrown at her face. The film Chhapaak is based on the story of a victim who fought the extreme physical and mental trauma of an acid attack and rose above it to bring a positive change.
For more on the meaning of the word Chhapaak, see this post.
koi chehra miTa ke
aur aankh se haTa ke
chand chheente uRa ke jo gaya
chhapaak se pehchaan le gaya
someone, erasing her face,
making it bad to look,
went, throwing a few drops (of acid),
and with a sudden splash, took her identity away.
ek chehra gira
jaise mohra gira
jaise dhoop ko grahaN lag gaya
chhapaak se pehchaan le gaya
a face fell,
like chessmen fall,
like the sun was eclipsed.
someone took away her identity with a sudden splash.
[In Hindi, the capture of any piece in a game of chess is called 'marna', i.e. its death. Thus, a face falling like a piece of chess may be a comparison to the death of a face or a near-death experience of the person who is attacked, as the person can be compared to a piece too, if one considers life a game of chess.
Also, chehra-mohra is used together to express how one looks. That is ruined with the attack here too.]
na chaah na chaahat koi
na koi aisa vaada
haath mein andhera
aur aankh mein iraada
She has no desire, nor love for anything,
nor any promise of anything like that.
There is just darkness in her hands,
and a purpose visible in the eye.
koi chehra miTa ke
aur aankh se haTa ke
chand chheenTe uRa ke jo gaya
chhapaak se pehchaan le gaya
ek chehra gira
jaise mohra gira
jaise dhoop ko grahaN lag gaya
chhapaak se pehchaan le gaya
bemaani sa junoon tha
bin aag ke dhuaan
na hosh na khayaal
soch andha kuaan
it was a pointless passion,
smoke without fire.
there was no sense, nor any thought behind this,
but a thinking that was a blinding, dark well.
[These lines seem to be about the perpetrator, who threw acid after his advances were rejected, something that has happened quite a few times.]
koi chehra miTa ke
aur aankh se haTa ke
chand chheenTe uRa ke jo gaya
chhapaak se pehchaan le gaya
ek chehra gira
jaise mohra gira
jaise dhoop ko grahaN lag gaya
chhapaak se pehchaan le gaya
aarzoo thi shauq thhe,
wo saare haT gaye
kitne saare jeene ke
taage kaT gaye
she had desires and hobbies,
they were all gone.
so many threads of life
seemed to be cut suddenly.
sab jhulas gaya...
everything was singed.
[This is written metaphorically, to say that all the dreams and desires were singed, but this also hints about the physical singeing of the face too.]
koi chehra miTa ke...
ek chehra gira
jaise mohra gira
jaise dhoop ko grahaN lag gaya
chhapaak se pehchaan le gaya
chhapaak se pehchaan le gaya
pehchaan le gaya
pehchaan le gaya
